Sanquhar and Kirkconnel
Sanquhar is home to the oldest working post office in the world. Located on the High Street, it was originally opened in 1712. The quaint building will soon also be home to a museum on this subject and a philatelic club for enthusiasts.
Kirkconnel Heritage Society, Main Street provides detailed records of the area, with a specific focus on its mining heritage. There is the chance to browse through thousands of historic catalogued photographs and artefacts as well as speak to the team about the history of the area.
They also host a display on Crawick Multiverse, providing more information on the history and development of the site including photographs charting the transformation from an open cast mine.
A’ the Airts, Sanquhar High Street is also hosting a display on Crawick Multiverse as well as being home to the Sanquhar Knitting Project. A recently revived project, they produce a variety of garments in the world famous Sanquhar Pattern.
As well as being adjacent to the route of the Southern Upland Way, there are also a number of beautiful walking routes that can start and finish at Crawick Multiverse. Details of these walks are available from our staff.
